SECTION 12496

 

                                                            SKYLIGHT SHADES

 

*****  This section can be used for specifying both manually operated and motorized Draper Skylight FlexShades installed below building skylights for sunlight control and room darkening.

 

There are options for type of operation, location of operator, size, fabric, controls, method of installation, hardware, and hardware finish.  Refer to Draper product literature for availability of options and selection guidelines.  Various options are listed in this specification section and the specifier will need to select the appropriate options, verify their availability, and delete non-applicable ones. 

 

When vertically installed, roll-up window shades are specified, use SECTION 12492 - MANUALLY OPERATED WINDOW SHADES, SECTION 12493 - MOTORIZED WINDOW SHADES, SECTION 12494 - OPAQUE WINDOW SHADE SYSTEM, SECTION 12497 - DUAL ROLLER WINDOW SHADES, or SECTION 12498 - VERTICAL FOLDING WINDOW SHADES.  If fixed window and skylight panels with open weave glare control fabric are to be specified, use SECTION 12495 - SUN CONTROL PANELS.  *****

 

PART 1 - GENERAL

 

1.1       SUMMARY

 

*****  Draper Skylight Flexshades can be installed horizontally or on a slope.  When installed on a slope, the roller boxes must be level.  In other words, the skylight shade can operate up and down the slope but not side to side perpendicular to the slope.  *****

1.2       SUBMITTALS

 

            A.    Submit in accordance with Section 01330 - Submittal Procedures:

 

                   1.    List of proposed products and product data.

 

                   2.    Shop drawings showing skylight openings, dimensions, attachment method, and electrical and control wiring.

 

                   3.    Samples [for selection by Architect]:

 

                           a.    Fabrics.

 

                           b.    Metal finishes.

 

                   4.    Skylight Shade Schedule listing rooms, field verified skylight dimensions, quantities, type of shade, [controls,] fabric, and color.

 

                   5.    Manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions.

 

1.3       DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

 

*****  In order to reduce potential damage to shades, it is desirable to deliver and install skylight shades after construction is essentially complete.  *****

 

            A.    Do not deliver skylight shades until building is enclosed and construction within spaces where shades will be installed is substantially complete.

 

            B.    Deliver products in manufacturer's original, unopened, undamaged containers with labels intact.

 

            C.    Label containers and shades according to Skylight Shade Schedule.

 


PARTS 2 - PRODUCTS

 

2.1       ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

 

            A.    Draper, Inc., 411 South Pearl Street, Spiceland, Indiana 47385-0425; 765-987-7999.

 

            B.    Manufacturers of equivalent products submitted and approved in accordance with Section 01630 - Product Substitution Procedures.

 

2.2       SKYLIGHT SHADES

 

            A.    Type:  [Electrically] [Crank] operated, horizontal, roll-up, fabric, skylight shade; Skylight FlexShade System as manufactured by Draper, Inc.

 

*****  Skylight Flexshade System can be mounted inside or outside skylight opening.  ***** 

 

            B.    Method of installation:  Mounted [inside of skylight opening and extending from wall to wall.] [to ceiling and overlapping skylight opening.]

 

*****  Draper Skylight Flexshade System can be manually or electrically operated.  Manual shades are provided with crank operating mechanism.  For Crank Operated Skylight FlexShade System include the following paragraphs.  *****

 

            C.    Operation:  Crank and gear box operated shades.

 

                   1.    Gear box:  Die cast aluminum and steel construction with 3 to 1 ratio.  Injection molded nylon and steel crank insert installed in roller to engage gear box.

 

*****  Crank handle is detachable and can be provided in lengths up to 10 feet (3 m).  Unless handle length is specified, Draper will provide a standard length based on skylight height.  Crank operation is not recommended for skylight shades installed at heights greater than 10 feet (3048 mm).  *****

*****  Draper Motorized Skylight FlexShade System can be provided with crank override to provide manual operation in event of power outage or motor failure.  Include the following paragraph and subparagraphs if crank override option is required.  *****

 

                   2.    Crank operation override:  Crank and gear box operate shades in event of power outage or motor failure.

 

                           a.    Gear box:  Die cast aluminum and steel construction with 3 to 1 ratio.  Injection molded nylon and steel crank insert installed in roller to engage gear box.

*****  Due to the force of gravity, maximum width for unsupported Skylight FlexShades is 42 inches (1067 mm).  If one or more supplementary support cables are installed, maximum size is 72 inches (1829 mm) wide by 120 inches (3048 mm) long.  *****

            G.    Rollers: 

 

                   1.    [Motorized] [Crank operated] roller:  2 inches [50 mm] diameter extruded aluminum.

 

                   2.    Take-up roller:  1-3/4 inches [44 mm] diameter galvanized steel roller with heavy duty spring.  Equip with take-up reels to ensure take-up straps remain in alignment.

 

                   3.    Provide with roller idler assembly of molded nylon and zinc-plated steel pin.  Sliding pin to allow easy installation and removal of roller.

 

            H.    Endcaps:  Stamped steel with roller adapter and designed for mounting enclosure and receiving fabric guides.

 

            I.     Enclosures:  Fabricated from [0.06 inch] [1.59 mm] thick extruded aluminum sections with endcaps and opacity plates.

 

                   1.    Size:  [3-1/2 inches] [89 mm] high by [4 inches] [102 mm] wide by length required for shade being provided.

 

*****  For inside mounting, front and top of enclosure are removable.  For outside mounting, back and bottom of enclosure are removable.  *****

 

                   2.    L-shaped [removable] front and top cover and L-shaped [removable] back and bottom.

 

            J.     Side Channels:  Double chamber fabricated from [0.06 inch] [1.59 mm] thick extruded aluminum sections.  One chamber accepts fabric and contains groove for fabric retainer.  Other chamber accepts fabric guide and channel locator.  

 

            K.   Channel locator:  Injected molded nylon insert to align enclosures and side channels.

 

            L.    Slat bar:  Extruded aluminum bar attached to shade and extending between side channels.  Bar provides attachment point for take-up strap.

 

            M.   Take-up strap:  Kevlar straps with minimum breaking strength of 250 pounds.  Straps operate in side channels and are concealed from view.

 

            N.   Fabric guide:  Plated steel transition for fabric rolling into side channel.

 

            O.   Fabric retainer:  Horizontal steel stays installed in shade, covered with fabric, and spaced at regular intervals.  Grommets installed through stays are held within groove of side channel chamber.

 

            P.    Opacity plates:  Steel plates with rubber O rings installed on endcaps to eliminate light leakage.

 

            Q.   Exposed aluminum finish:  [Clear anodized.] [[Black] [White] [Ivory] [Charcoal bronze] baked enamel paint.]

 

2.3       CONTROLS

 

*****  If motorized LightBloc FlexShades are used, include this article.  Delete, if manual crank operated LightBloc FlexShades are used.  *****

 

*****  Various types of controls are available for motorized Skylight FlexShades.  Shades can be controlled individually, as a group, or by a combination of group and individual controls.  Shades can also be interfaced to be controlled by either Draper motorized projection screen or projector lift.  Refer to product literature or contact Draper for assistance in selecting and specifying controls.  Select appropriate paragraphs for selected types of controls and delete other options.  *****

 

*****  Individual 3 position toggle switch control is standard for all Draper electrically operated skylight shades.  *****

 

            A.    Individual shade control:  3 position toggle switch with cover plate, accepting 110 V current.  Provide one switch for each shade.

 

*****  In order to limit access to shade controls, each shade can be provided with a 3 position key operated control switch.  Switch can only be operated with key.  ***** 

 

            B.    Key operated control switch:  For each shade provide a key operated control switch with three key positions for up, down, and stop functions for 110 V power.  Provide with [2] [_____] keys.

 

*****  Individual motorized shades can be controlled by sun sensor.  *****

 

            C.    Sun sensor control:  For each shade provide automatic, programmable sun sensor control responding to daylight intensity.  Include time delay override allowing for passing clouds.

 

*****  Individual shades can be controlled by low voltage control which can be provided with 3 position switches or without switches as interface with a master control system, a radio frequency remote control receiver, or an infrared remote control receiver.  *****

 

            D.    Low voltage control:  Provide each shade with low voltage control.  Control station [to have 3 button switches for up, down and stop functions] [to be without switches for interface with [master control system] [radio frequency remote control receiver] [infrared remote control receiver].  Wiring from switches or receivers to low voltage control unit to be 24 V. 

 

*****  Portable, hand held remote control transmitters can be provided for operation of motorized Draper shades.  These units need to be provided with and connected to a low voltage control unit.  *****

 

            E.    Radio frequency remote control:  Provide each motorized shade with hand held 4 button transmitter and receiver unit to connect to low voltage control unit.

 

*****  Portable, hand held remote control infrared transmitters can be provided for operation of motorized Draper shades.  These units need to be provided with and connected to a low voltage control unit.  *****

 

            F.    Infrared remote control:  Provide each motorized shade with hand held 3 button control for up, down, and stop functions and receiver unit to connect to low voltage control unit.

 

*****  Motorized shades can be individually controlled by 24 hour digital programmable timer.  *****

 

            G.    Digital programmable timer:  Provide each motorized shade 24 hour digital programmable timer.

 

*****  Motorized shades can be controlled in groups.  Either master switch, key operated switch, sun sensor, radio frequency, infrared, or timer control units can be provided to operate multiple linked groups.  *****

 

            H.    Group control system:  Control [2] [_____] shades with 24 V current using [3 position toggle switch] [3 position key operated switch] [programmable sun sensor responding to daylight intensity and including time delay override for passing clouds] [radio frequency remote control transmitter and receiver unit] [infrared remote control transmitter and receiver unit] [24 hour digital programmable timer].  [Link 2 or more groups of shades with master switch according to groupings shown on Drawings.]

 

*****  Motorized Draper shades can be controlled by both individual shade control switches and in groups up to 3 shades.  Either master switch, key operated switch, sun sensor, radio frequency, infrared, or timer control units can be provided to operate multiple linked groups.  *****

 

            I.     Individual and group control system:  Control [2] [3] shades both individually and in a group with low voltage (24V) system.  Use with 3 position toggle switch for each individual shade and [3 position toggle switch] [3 position key operated switch] [programmable sun sensor responding to daylight intensity and including time delay override for passing clouds] [radio frequency remote control transmitter and receiver unit] [infrared remote control transmitter and receiver unit] [24 hour digital programmable timer] for group control.  [Link 2 or more groups of shades with master switch according to groupings shown on Drawings.] 

*****  Interface control system allows shades to be linked with other building control systems such as HVAC and lighting.  Shades can also be integrated and controlled by Draper motorized projection screen, projector lift, or projector switch.  When screen, lift, projector, or tuner is powered, shades descend automatically.  Draper's Smart Motor Systems can be used for integrated control with the ability to re-configure without rewiring.  Contact Draper for assistance in designing, specifying, and preparing wiring diagrams for interfaced controls.  ***** 

 

            J.     Interface control system:  Interface to allow motorized shades to be controlled by [HVAC system] [lighting system] [video projector] [motorized projection screen] [motorized projector lift] [_____] through [Smart Motor System] [_____] as manufactured by Draper, Inc.  Equip interface with override switch permitting independent operation of screen.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

 

3.1       PREPARATION

 

            A.    Field verify skylight dimensions prior to fabrication.

 

            B.    Coordinate requirements for blocking and structural supports to ensure adequate means for installation of skylight shades.

 

            C.    Coordinate installation of skylight shades with construction of skylight opening  and suspended [acoustical panel]  [gypsum board] ceilings specified in Section [_____] - [__________].

 

            [D.  Coordinate requirements for power supply, conduit, and wiring required for skylight shade motors and controls.  Provide holes in enclosures for conduit and wiring as required by shade and site conditions and indicated on approved shop drawings.]

3.2       INSTALLATION

 

            A.    Install skylight shades at locations indicated on Drawings and approved Skylight Shade Schedule.

 

            B.    Comply with shade manufacturer's written instructions.

 

*****  If an opaque skylight system with opaque fabric is required for complete blackout of skylight opening, include the following paragraph.  *****

 

            C.    Install roller enclosures and side channels with sealant specified in Section 07900 - Joint Sealers to eliminate light leaks at perimeter of shade system.

 

            D.    Position skylight shade system level and in alignment with skylight opening.  Secure with fasteners recommended by manufacturer.

 

            [E.   Provide support cables at [27 inches] [686 mm] minimum taut.  Install taut, centered, and parallel to side channels with brackets and turnbuckles.]

 

3.3       TESTING AND DEMONSTRATION

 

            A.    Test skylight shades to verify that [crank] [and] [motorized] operating mechanism, [controls,] [limit switches,] [interface to other building systems,] fabric retainer, and other operating components are functional.  Correct deficiencies.

            B.    During daylight hours, close shades and turn off interior lights.  Verify that there are no light leaks at perimeter or within shade assembly.  Correct deficiencies.

 

            C.    Demonstrate operation of shades to Owner's designated representatives.

 

3.4       PROTECTING

 

            A.    Clean shade assemblies and protect from damage from construction operations.  If damage occurs, remove and replace damaged components or entire unit as required to provide units in their original, undamaged condition.
